c) National History (Mahébourg) Museum9am-4pm Wed-Mon

Located at a colonial residence built in around 1771 on the south east coast on A10 road at Mahébourg between Blue Bay and Vieux Grand Port.
The museum occupies three floors, tow of which are accessible to the public. On the ground floor wreckage of sailing ships that took part in the Grand Port battle, original cannon, cannonball, paintings and swords and weaponry of Robert Surcouf, the eighteenth-century corsair, popularly known as the king of the Corsairs. A large relief map shows the complicated reefs of Vieux Grand Port where the great battle took place. The bell, recovered from the wreckage of the St Geran which sunk off the east coast in 1744, is also on display. There is an interesting newspaper cutting of Charles Seabourne, who with survivors from the ship Trevessa, landed at Bel Ombre in the south in 1923 after spending 25 days at sea. On display are the ship's biscuits, a razor and the lid of a cigarette tin which they used to measure water rations. In a separate showcase is a Roll of Honour dedicated to Mauritians who died in World War II.
On the first floor are Labourdonnais' four-poster bed, two palanquins or wooden sedan-type chairs, which were borne by slaves to convey their masters through the country and a collection of coins, curios, model sailing ships and early maps, labelled in French and English.

d) Church of Sainte-Croix

Jacques-Désiré Laval (1803-1864)
He was sent as a missionary to the island of Mauritius in 1841. He spent the next twenty-three years in service to the people of that island nation.
Many of Père Laval's parishioners were poor and uneducated former slaves. He lived with them, learned their language, fasted when supplies were short, and slept in a packing crate.

e) Mauritius Sega dance

Inscribed in 2014 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Sega music is the major music of the Mascarene Islands: Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues as well as of the Seychelles.
Sega music originated among the slave populations of Mauritius and Réunion.
It is usually in 6/8 tempo and has an associated dance form.
The music's traditional form was largely improvised and intensely emotional and expressed the tribulations of a subjugated, initially enslaved, people.
Sega is danced without the feet ever leaving the ground. Instead, the rest of the body moves.

f) Seven Coloured Earth at Chamarel Mauritius

In the Chamarel plain, in the Rivière Noire District of south-western Mauritius, you can find the Seven Coloured Earth(s), approximately red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow. They are spontaneously settled in small area of sand dunes in different layers, acquiring a surrealistic, striped colouring. If one takes a handful of sands of different colours and mixes them together, they'll eventually separate into a layered spectrum. The Chamarel's Coloured Earths seemingly never erode, in spite of torrential, tropical rains.

g) The novel Paul and Virginie (Mary) by Bernardin de Saint Pierre (1737-1814) which was published in 1787 and has appeared in more than 500 editions and translations, is the master-piece of French colonial romanticism before even the term romantic became fashionable.
The characters of Paul and Virginie lived in the island of Mauritius under French rule, then named Île de France, which the author had visited and described as a place without needing technology or man-made interference. Paul and Virginie are two playmates whose affection develop into love. The story ends with the drowning of Virginie and the death of Paul from grief. It is said that "few works in the abundant exotic literature have drawn so many tears".
Many readers of the novel came to visit Mauritius in search of the paradise described in the book.
