1:1 quoniam quidem
multi conati sunt 1.
Forasmuch as many have taken in ordinare narrationem quae in nobis hand to set forth in order a conpletae sunt rerum declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, 1:2 sicut tradiderunt nobis qui ab 2. Even as they delivered them unto initio ipsi viderunt et ministri us, which from the beginning were fuerunt sermonis eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; 1:3 visum est et mihi adsecuto a 3. It seemed good to me also, having principio omnibus diligenter ex ordine had perfect understanding of all things tibi scribere optime Theophile from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, 1:4 ut cognoscas eorum verborum de 4. That thou mightest know the quibus eruditus es veritatem certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed. 1:5 fuit in diebus Herodis regis 5. THERE was in the days of Herod, the Iudaeae sacerdos quidam nomine king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zaccharias de vice Abia et uxor illi de Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and filiabus Aaron et nomen eius Elisabeth his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 1:6 erant autem iusti ambo ante Deum 6. And they were both righteous before incedentes in omnibus mandatis et God, walking in all the commandments iustificationibus Domini sine querella and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 1:7 et non erat illis filius eo quod 7. And they had no child, because that esset Elisabeth sterilis et ambo Elisabeth was barren, and they both processissent in diebus suis were now well stricken in years. 1:8 factum est autem cum sacerdotio 8. And it came to pass, that while he fungeretur in ordine vicis suae ante executed the priest's office before God Deum in the order of his course, 1:9 secundum consuetudinem sacerdotii 9. And thou shalt have joy and et multi in nativitate eius gaudebunt gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 1:15 erit enim magnus coram Domino et 15. For he shall be great in the sight vinum et sicera non bibet et Spiritu of the Lord, and shall drink neither Sancto replebitur adhuc ex utero matris wine nor strong drink; and he shall be suae filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. 1:16 et multos filiorum Israhel 16. And many of the children of Israel convertet ad Dominum Deum ipsorum shall he turn to the Lord their God. 1:17 et ipse praecedet ante illum in 17. And he shall go before him in the spiritu et virtute Heliae ut convertat spirit and power of Elias, to turn the corda patrum in filios et incredibiles hearts of the fathers to the children, ad prudentiam iustorum parare Domino and the disobedient to the wisdom of plebem perfectam the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 1:18 et dixit Zaccharias ad angelum 18. And Zacharias said unto the angel, unde hoc sciam ego enim sum senex et Whereby shall I know this? for I am an uxor mea processit in diebus suis old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 1:19 et respondens angelus dixit ei 19. And the angel answering said unto ego sum Gabrihel qui adsto ante Deum et him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the missus sum loqui ad te et haec tibi presence of God; and am sent to speak evangelizare unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 1:20 et ecce eris tacens et non 20. And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, poteris loqui usque in diem quo haec and not able to speak, until the day fiant pro eo quod non credidisti verbis that these things shall be performed, meis quae implebuntur in tempore suo because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. 1:21 et erat plebs expectans 21. And in the sixth month the angel angelus Gabrihel a Deo in civitatem Gabriel was sent from God unto a city Galilaeae cui nomen Nazareth of Galilee, named Nazareth, 1:27 ad virginem desponsatam viro cui 27. To a virgin espoused to a man nomen erat Ioseph de domo David et whose name was Joseph, of the house of nomen virginis Maria David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 1:28 et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit 28. And the angel came in unto her, have gratia plena Dominus tecum and said, Hail, thou that art highly benedicta tu in mulieribus favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 1:29 quae cum vidisset turbata est in 29. And when she saw him, she was sermone eius et cogitabat qualis esset troubled at his saying, and cast in her ista salutatio mind what manner of salutation this should be. 1:30 et ait angelus ei ne timeas Maria 30. And the angel said unto her, Fear invenisti enim gratiam apud Deum not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 1:31 ecce concipies in utero et paries 31. And, behold, thou shalt conceive filium et vocabis nomen eius Iesum in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 1:32 hic erit magnus et Filius 32. He shall be great, and shall be Altissimi vocabitur et dabit illi called the Son of the Highest: and the Dominus Deus sedem David patris eius Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 1:33 et regnabit in domo Iacob in 33. And he shall reign over the house aeternum et regni eius non erit finis of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 1:34 dixit autem Maria ad angelum 34. Then said Mary unto the angel, How quomodo fiet istud quoniam virum non shall this be, seeing I know not a man? cognosco 1:35 et respondens angelus dixit ei 35. And the angel answered and said Spiritus Sanctus superveniet in te et unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come virtus Altissimi obumbrabit tibi upon thee, and the power of the Highest ideoque et quod nascetur sanctum shall overshadow thee: therefore also vocabitur Filius Dei that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 1:36 et ecce Elisabeth cognata tua et 36. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, ipsa concepit filium in senecta sua et she hath also conceived a son in her hic mensis est sextus illi quae vocatur old age: and this is the sixth month sterilis with her, who was called barren. 1:37 quia non erit inpossibile apud 37. For with God nothing shall be Deum omne verbum impossible. 1:38 dixit autem Maria ecce ancilla 38. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid Domini fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum of the Lord; be it unto me according to et discessit ab illa angelus thy word. And the angel departed from her. 1:39 exsurgens autem Maria in diebus 39. And Mary arose in those days, and illis abiit in montana cum festinatione went into the hill country with haste, in civitatem Iuda into a city of Juda; 1:40 et intravit in domum Zacchariae 40. And entered into the house of et salutavit Elisabeth Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 1:41 et factum est ut audivit 41. And it came to pass, that, when salutationem Mariae Elisabeth exultavit Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, infans in utero eius et repleta est the babe leaped in her womb; and Spiritu Sancto Elisabeth Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 1:42 et exclamavit voce magna et dixit 42. And she spake out with a loud benedicta tu inter mulieres et voice, and said, Blessed art thou among benedictus fructus ventris tui women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 1:43 et unde hoc mihi ut veniat mater 43. And whence is this to me, that the Domini mei ad me mother of my Lord should come to me? 1:44 ecce enim ut facta est vox 44. For, lo, as soon as the voice of salutationis tuae in auribus meis thy salutation sounded in mine ears, exultavit in gaudio infans in utero meo the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 1:45 et beata quae credidit quoniam 45. And blessed is she that believed: perficientur ea quae dicta sunt ei a for there shall be a performance of Domino those things which were told her from the Lord. 1:46 et ait Maria magnificat anima mea 46. And Mary said, My soul doth Dominum magnify the Lord, 1:47 et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo 47. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God salutari meo my Saviour. 1:48 quia respexit humilitatem 48. For he hath regarded the low ancillae suae ecce enim ex hoc beatam estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, me dicent omnes generationes from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 1:49 quia fecit mihi magna qui potens 49. For he that is mighty hath done to est et sanctum nomen eius me great things; and holy is his name. 1:50 et misericordia eius in progenies 50. And his mercy is on them that fear et progenies timentibus eum him from generation to generation. 1:51 fecit potentiam in brachio suo 51. He hath shewed strength with his dispersit superbos mente cordis sui arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 1:52 deposuit potentes de sede et 52. He hath put down the mighty from exaltavit humiles their seats, and exalted them of low degree. 1:53 esurientes implevit bonis et 53. He hath filled the hungry with divites dimisit inanes good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. 1:54 suscepit Israhel puerum suum 54. He hath holpen his servant Israel, memorari misericordiae in remembrance of his mercy; 1:55 sicut locutus est ad patres 55. As he spake to our fathers, to nostros Abraham et semini eius in Abraham, and to his seed for ever. saecula 1:56 mansit autem Maria cum illa quasi 56. And Mary abode with her about mensibus tribus et reversa est in domum three months, and returned to her own suam house. 1:57 Elisabeth autem impletum est 57. Now Elisabeth's full time came tempus pariendi et peperit filium that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 1:58 et audierunt vicini et cognati 58. And her neighbours and her cousins eius quia magnificavit Dominus heard how the Lord had shewed great misericordiam suam cum illa et mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with congratulabantur ei her. 1:59 et factum est in die octavo 59. And it came to pass, that on the venerunt circumcidere puerum et eighth day they came to circumcise the vocabant eum nomine patris eius child; and they called him Zacharias, Zacchariam after the name of his father. 1:60 et respondens mater eius dixit 60. And his mother answered and said, nequaquam sed vocabitur Iohannes Not so; but he shall be called John. 1:61 et dixerunt ad illam quia nemo 61. And they said unto her, There is est in cognatione tua qui vocetur hoc none of thy kindred that is called by nomine this name. 1:62 innuebant autem patri eius quem 62. And they made signs to his father, vellet vocari eum how he would have him called. 1:63 et postulans pugillarem scripsit 63. And he asked for a writing table, dicens Iohannes est nomen eius et and wrote, saying, His name is John. mirati sunt universi And they marvelled all. 1:64 apertum est autem ilico os eius 64. And his mouth was opened et lingua eius et loquebatur benedicens immediately, and his tongue loosed, and Deum he spake, and praised God. 1:65 et factus est timor super omnes 65. And fear came on all that dwelt vicinos eorum et super omnia montana round about them: and all these sayings Iudaeae divulgabantur omnia verba haec were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. 1:66 et posuerunt omnes qui audierant 66. And all they that heard them laid in corde suo dicentes quid putas puer them up in their hearts, saying, What iste erit etenim manus Domini erat cum manner of child shall this be! And the illo hand of the Lord was with him. 1:67 et Zaccharias pater eius impletus 67. And his father Zacharias was est Spiritu Sancto et prophetavit dicens filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, 1:68 benedictus Deus Israhel quia 68. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; visitavit et fecit redemptionem plebi for he hath visited and redeemed his suae people, 1:69 et erexit cornu salutis nobis in 69. And hath raised up an horn of domo David pueri sui salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 1:70 sicut locutus est per os 70. As he spake by the mouth of his sanctorum qui a saeculo sunt holy prophets, which have been since prophetarum eius the world began: 1:71 salutem ex inimicis nostris et de 71. That we should be saved from our manu omnium qui oderunt nos enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 1:72 ad faciendam misericordiam cum 72. To perform the mercy promised to patribus nostris et memorari testamenti our fathers, and to remember his holy sui sancti covenant; 1:73 iusiurandum quod iuravit ad 73. The oath which he sware to our Abraham patrem nostrum father Abraham, 1:74 daturum se nobis ut sine timore 74. That he would grant unto us, that de manu inimicorum nostrorum liberati we being delivered out of the hand of serviamus illi our enemies might serve him without fear, 1:75 in sanctitate et iustitia coram 75. In holiness and righteousness ipso omnibus diebus nostris before him, all the days of our life. 1:76 et tu puer propheta Altissimi 76. And thou, child, shalt be called vocaberis praeibis enim ante faciem the prophet of the Highest: for thou Domini parare vias eius shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 1:77 ad dandam scientiam salutis plebi 77. To give knowledge of salvation eius in remissionem peccatorum eorum unto his people by the remission of their sins, 1:78 per viscera misericordiae Dei 78. Through the tender mercy of our nostri in quibus visitavit nos oriens God; whereby the dayspring from on high ex alto hath visited us, 1:79 inluminare his qui in tenebris et 79. To give light to them that sit in in umbra mortis sedent ad dirigendos darkness and in the shadow of death, to pedes nostros in viam pacis guide our feet into the way of peace. 1:80 puer autem crescebat et 80. And the child grew, and waxed confortabatur spiritu et erat in strong in spirit, and was in the deserto usque in diem ostensionis suae deserts till the day of his shewing ad Israhel unto Israel. |
