SOMNIUM SCIPIONIS
- Cicero De Re Publica (54-51 B.C.)

10) Post autem apparatu (supine abl) regio accepti (part pf pass) sermonem in multam noctem produximus (pf ind) ,
After being treated in a royal banquet we talked late into the night

with the old man talked of nothing else except Africanus and recalled not only his achievements but also all that he had said.

Afterwards we parted to go to bed, because I was weary from the journey and from staying up a sounder sleep than usual came over me.

This for me,(I believe it came from what we had said, for it often happens

ut cogitationes sermonesque nostri pariant (pres ind sbj) aliquid in somno tale,
that our thoughts and conversations often produce images in our sleep

quale de Homero scribit (pres ind) Ennius,
just as Ennius wrote about Homer

de quo videlicet saepissime vigilans (part pres) solebat (imp ind - impersonal) cogitare (pres inf) et loqui (pres inf pass dep) )
about whom in his waking hours he thought and spoke most frequently)

Africanus se ostendit (pres ind) ea forma, quae mihi ex imagine eius quam ex ipso erat (impf ind) notior;
Africanus showed himself to me with such images, that I knew more from his bust than from the man himself.

quem ubi agnovi (pf ind) , equidem cohorrui (pf ind) sed ille Ades (imperative pres) , inquit (pres ind) , animo
When I recognized him I really did tremble, but he said: “Pay attention,

and put aside your fear, Scipio, and commit to your memory what I shall say.
