THE GREEK AND ROMAN HERITAGE

 

 

 

 

ParthenonÕs construction began in 447BC and completed in 432BC. It shows the culmination of the development of the Doric order. It is a symbol of ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy.

 

 

 

 

Colosseum started its construction between 70 and 72 AD under the emperor Titus Flavius Vespasianus (9-79 AD) and was completed in 80 AD under Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus (39-81 AD) with further modifications being made during the reign of Titus Flavius Domitianus (51-96 AD).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Pantheon, built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (c. 63 BC–12 BC) as a temple to all the gods of Ancient Rome, was rebuilt by Publius Aelius Hadrianus (76-138 AD) in about 126 AD.

St. Peter's Basilica in Rome has its foundation stone laid in 1506. Its dome was completed in 1590. Architects and artists working for the basilica included Donato Bramante (1444 Ð 1514), Sanzio Raffaello (1483 Ð 1520) , Antonio da Sangallo (1484 - 1546), Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 Ð 1564), Giacomo della Porta (1533 Ð 1602).
