Course Description:
The course aims at helping students develop deeper insights into religious understanding by engaging in the spatial, geographical and material dimensions of religious traditions in Melaka, Malaysia, where the West met the East in the 16th century and where the Islamic, Jewish, Christian as well as Hinduist, Buddhist, Taoist religious traditions coexist harmoniously.
The majority of the academic work will be accomplished during the 4-day stay in Melaka, supplimented by 4 lectures before the trip and one after.

Learning Outcomes:
(1) develop a greater awareness and deeper insight into the subject of study through field investigation of the religious sites, relics, as well as personal exposure to the material heritage
(2) learn to master the principles and skills in integrating the use of textual, non-textual information and on-site investigation in religious studies
(3) develop skills in analytical reading, formal writing, oral expression, on-site observation and critical thinking
(4) Be conscious of the significance and value of study tours through which a far more comprehensive perspective can be generated in the realm of religious studies

Assessment:
Attendance and participation 20%
Post-trip class presentation 30% (12 April, 2014)
Final paper 50% (before/on 5 May, 2014, about 5,000 words)

It is the oldest church in Malaysia, built by the Portuguese descendants after religious freedom was proclaimed by the Dutch over Malacca in 1702. One of its artifacts is the 1608 bell found inside the Church's Tower.

Kristang Community for cultural Judaism 猶太教 The Kristang language originated after the conquest of Malacca (Malaysia) in 1511 by the Portuguese. The community of speakers descends mainly from marriages between Portuguese settlers and local Malay women, as well as a certain number of migrants from Goa, themselves of mixed Indian and Portuguese ancestry. Kristang had a substantial influence on Macanese, the creole language spoken in Macau, due to substantial migration from Malacca after its takeover by the Dutch.
